Colors in French

Learn French colors and how to use them in simple descriptions.

Colors are useful for describing the people, places, and things around you. In French, you'll use words such as rouge, bleu, and vert in many everyday situations.

You'll learn the basic colors, how to use them with nouns, and how to ask what color something is.

Basic color vocabulary

Start with some of the most common colors in French.

French English
rouge red
bleu blue
vert green
jaune yellow
orange orange
rose pink
violet purple
noir black
blanc white
gris gray / grey
marron brown

You can use a color on its own when the context is clear:

French English
C'est rouge. It's red.
C'est bleu. It's blue.
C'est vert. It's green.
C'est noir. It's black.

Using colors with nouns

In French, a color usually comes after the noun it describes.

noun + color

This is different from English, where the color usually comes before the noun.

French English
une voiture rouge a red car
un vélo bleu a blue bike
une pomme verte a green apple
une maison blanche a white house
un chat noir a black cat

You can also use a color after être:

French English
La voiture est rouge. The car is red.
Le vélo est bleu. The bike is blue.
La pomme est verte. The apple is green.
La maison est blanche. The house is white.

Colors can change form

Many French color adjectives change to agree with the noun they describe.

Compare these examples:

French English
un vélo noir a black bike
une voiture noire a black car
un sac vert a green bag
une pomme verte a green apple
un mur blanc a white wall
une maison blanche a white house

For many colors, the feminine form is made by adding -e. Some colors, such as blanc, change in a different way.

Colors can also change when they describe a plural noun:

French English
des vélos noirs black bikes
des voitures noires black cars
des sacs verts green bags
des pommes vertes green apples

Some color words, including orange and marron, do not change in these examples.

At A1, focus on recognizing these different forms as you encounter them. You don't need to memorize every agreement pattern at once.

Light and dark colors

Use clair to describe a lighter shade and foncé to describe a darker shade.

color + clair / foncé

French English
bleu clair light blue
bleu foncé dark blue
vert clair light green
vert foncé dark green
gris clair light gray / grey
gris foncé dark gray / grey

For example:

French English
Le mur est bleu clair. The wall is light blue.
Le sac est vert foncé. The bag is dark green.
La voiture est gris foncé. The car is dark gray / grey.

French English

You can answer with être followed by the color:
