Expressing how you feel

Learn French expressions for asking how someone feels, answering naturally, and giving more information about how you are.

Asking how someone is and responding to the same question are common parts of everyday conversation in French.

You can give a general answer, name a specific feeling or emotion, or add a little more information when you want to explain how you are.

Asking how someone is

Comment ça va ? is a common general question about how someone is doing:

French English
Comment ça va ? How are you?
Ça va ? How are you?
Vous allez bien ? Are you doing well?
Comment tu te sens ? How do you feel?
Comment vous vous sentez ? How do you feel?

Ça va ? is common in casual conversation. Comment tu te sens ? asks more directly about how someone feels.

Giving a general answer

You can answer Comment ça va ? without naming a specific feeling:

French English
Ça va très bien. I'm doing very well.
Ça va bien, merci. I'm doing well, thank you.
Ça va. I'm okay.
Ça ne va pas très bien. I'm not doing very well.
Ça ne va pas. I'm not okay.

You can return the question with Et toi ? or Et vous ?:

French English
Ça va bien, merci. Et toi ? I'm doing well, thanks. And you?
Très bien, merci. Et vous ? Very well, thank you. And you?

Naming a feeling or emotion

When you want to be more specific, you can use the vocabulary for physical feelings and emotions:

French English
Je suis contente. I'm happy.
Je suis triste. I'm sad.
Je suis fatigué. I'm tired.
J'ai faim. I'm hungry.
J'ai froid. I'm cold.
J'ai peur. I'm afraid.

The expression you use depends on the feeling. Some use être, while others use avoir.

Saying how strongly you feel

Words such as très and un peu let you give a little more information:

French English
très very
un peu a little
vraiment really

For example:

French English
Je suis très fatiguée. I'm very tired.
Je suis un peu triste. I'm a little sad.
J'ai vraiment faim. I'm really hungry.
J'ai un peu froid. I'm a little cold.

Giving a reason

Use parce que when you want to explain why you feel a certain way:

French English
Je suis fatigué parce que je travaille beaucoup. I'm tired because I work a lot.
Je suis contente parce que je suis en vacances. I'm happy because I'm on vacation.
J'ai froid parce que la fenêtre est ouverte. I'm cold because the window is open.
J'ai faim parce qu'il est tard. I'm hungry because it's late.

You do not need to explain every answer. A short Ça va or Je suis fatigué is often enough.

From learning to practice

The next time someone asks how you are, think beyond Ça va bien. Try giving a more specific answer in French, then add très, un peu, or a short reason with parce que.
