Discuss healthy habits and routines

What you'll learn

  • Describe habits that help you stay well.
  • Talk about check-ups and screening in general terms.
  • Give simple advice to others about rest, hydration, and hygiene.

You can talk about staying healthy in French with short statements about what you do, how often you do it, and simple advice for others. The same vocabulary covers everyday habits, measures that limit the spread of illness, and general preventive care.

For diet, exercise, sleep, and their effects on health, see Health and lifestyle. For washing, brushing your teeth, and other hygiene routines, see Hygiene and personal care. For vaccination, screening types, and medical tests, see Vaccination and prevention.

Talk about healthy habits

Several common verbs are useful when you describe habits and routines related to health:

French English
bien dormir to sleep well
se reposer to rest
boire assez d'eau to drink enough water
bien manger to eat well
faire de l'exercice to exercise
marcher to walk
rester actif / active to stay active
prendre soin de sa santé to take care of one's health

These expressions appear in short statements about regular habits:

French English
Je marche tous les jours. I walk every day.
Je bois beaucoup d'eau. I drink a lot of water.
J'essaie de bien dormir. I try to sleep well.
Je fais de l'exercice trois fois par semaine. I exercise three times a week.

When you describe a routine, you often say how often you do something:

French English
tous les jours every day
régulièrement regularly
souvent often
parfois sometimes
deux fois par semaine twice a week
trois fois par semaine three times a week

Rest and sleep

When you talk about rest and sleep, these nouns and verbs appear often:

French English
le sommeil sleep
le repos rest
dormir to sleep
se reposer to rest
être reposé / reposée to be well-rested
être fatigué / fatiguée to be tired

Dormir refers specifically to sleeping. Se reposer covers resting more broadly. A typical statement might mention how long you sleep, that you are tired, or that you need rest.

French English
Je dors huit heures par nuit. I sleep eight hours a night.
Je suis fatiguée. Je vais me reposer. I'm tired. I'm going to rest.
Je ne dors pas assez. I don't sleep enough.

Assez and trop often appear when you say whether a habit is sufficient or excessive:

French English
Je ne dors pas assez. I don't sleep enough.
Je travaille trop. I work too much.

Food and hydration

These expressions describe what you eat and drink when you talk about staying well:

French English
boire de l'eau to drink water
boire assez to drink enough
manger équilibré to eat a balanced diet
manger des fruits et des légumes to eat fruit and vegetables
éviter de manger trop de... to avoid eating too much...

The same ideas appear in short statements about what you drink and how you eat:

French English
Je bois de l'eau régulièrement pendant la journée. I drink water regularly during the day.
J'essaie de manger équilibré. I try to eat a balanced diet.
Il faut boire assez d'eau. You need to drink enough water.

Give simple health advice

Simple recommendations about everyday health often use il faut or the imperative:

French English
Il faut se reposer. You need to rest.
Il faut boire beaucoup d'eau. You need to drink plenty of water.
Il faut bien dormir. You need to sleep well.
Il faut rester actif. You need to stay active.

The imperative gives direct advice to one person or to several:

French English
Repose-toi. Get some rest.
Buvez beaucoup d'eau. Drink plenty of water.
Dormez bien. Get a good night's sleep.
Lavez-vous les mains. Wash your hands.

Tu forms fit someone you address informally. Vous forms fit someone you address formally or more than one person.

Everyday prevention

When illness spreads, people wash their hands, cover their mouth when they cough, stay home when they are sick, and air rooms:

French English
se laver les mains to wash one's hands
se couvrir la bouche to cover one's mouth
éviter le contact avec... to avoid contact with...
rester chez soi to stay home
aérer une pièce to air out a room

Hand washing, covering your mouth when you cough, and staying home when you are ill appear in advice to others and in what people say about their own habits:

French English
Lavez-vous les mains régulièrement. Wash your hands regularly.
Il faut se couvrir la bouche quand on tousse. You should cover your mouth when you cough.
Je reste chez moi quand je suis malade. I stay home when I'm sick.

Check-ups and screening

Preventive care also includes seeing a healthcare professional when you are not currently ill:

French English
un contrôle a check-up
un bilan de santé a health check-up
un examen an examination
un dépistage screening
faire un contrôle to have a check-up
faire un dépistage to undergo screening

These terms appear when you book or describe a medical visit and when a doctor recommends screening:

French English
Je fais un contrôle régulièrement. I have a check-up regularly.
J'ai rendez-vous pour un bilan de santé. I have an appointment for a health check-up.
Le médecin recommande un dépistage. The doctor recommends screening.

Un dépistage refers to testing intended to detect a disease or condition, often before symptoms appear.

Talk about your routine

Walking, exercise, water, sleep, and check-ups can appear together in one description:

French English
Je marche tous les jours et je fais de l'exercice deux fois par semaine. Je bois beaucoup d'eau, mais je ne dors pas toujours assez. I walk every day and exercise twice a week. I drink plenty of water, but I don't always get enough sleep.
Je prends soin de ma santé. Je mange équilibré, je reste actif et je fais des contrôles régulièrement. I take care of my health. I eat a balanced diet, stay active, and have regular check-ups.

From learning to practice

In everyday conversation, sleep, hydration, and activity come up with the same habit vocabulary as simple advice to others. When you book a check-up or read an appointment reminder, the visit is described with rendez-vous, contrôle, bilan de santé, and dépistage.
