Recovery and follow-up

What you'll learn

  • Recognize follow-up care and a follow-up appointment.
  • Understand when the doctor tells you to come back.
  • Recognize an instruction to get care promptly if symptoms get worse.

The end of a visit may include a time to come back, or a condition that means you should come back sooner. Coming back to the same doctor is not the same instruction as seeking care quickly.

Follow-up care

One term is the care after this visit. The other is the appointment for that care:

French English
un suivi follow-up care
un rendez-vous de suivi a follow-up appointment

When to come back

One instruction tells you to return to this doctor, either at a set time or under a condition. The other tells you to get care soon:

French English
Revenez me voir dans deux semaines. Come back and see me in two weeks.
Si ça ne va pas mieux, revenez me voir. If it doesn't get better, come back and see me.
Si les symptômes s'aggravent, consultez rapidement. If the symptoms get worse, seek medical attention promptly.

Revenez me voir names this doctor. Consultez rapidement tells you to get medical attention soon, and it does not say to wait for the same appointment.

From learning to practice

Listen for a length of time after revenez me voir. Dans deux semaines is a scheduled return. Si ça ne va pas mieux means you come back only if you are not improving.
