Help with personal care
When you are ill, injured, or recovering from a procedure, you may need to say what you cannot do. J'ai besoin d'aide pour followed by an infinitive is a pattern you can reuse:
| French | English |
|---|---|
| J'ai besoin d'aide pour me laver. | I need help washing myself. |
| J'ai besoin d'aide pour m'habiller. | I need help getting dressed. |
| J'ai besoin d'aide pour me brosser les dents. | I need help brushing my teeth. |
| J'ai besoin d'aide pour prendre une douche. | I need help taking a shower. |
| Je n'arrive pas à m'habiller. | I can't manage to get dressed. |
| Je ne peux pas lever le bras. | I can't lift my arm. |
| J'ai mal quand je bouge. | It hurts when I move. |
After pour, the reflexive pronoun matches the person. When you talk about yourself, se laver becomes me laver and s'habiller becomes m'habiller.
You can also say where you need help, or that you can manage on your own:
| French | English |
|---|---|
| J'ai besoin d'aide pour le dos. | I need help with my back. |
| Je peux le faire moi-même. | I can do it myself. |
| Je peux me laver seul. | I can wash myself without help. |
| Je peux m'habiller seul. | I can get dressed without help. |
If you are a woman, use seule in Je peux me laver seul and Je peux m'habiller seul.
